Types of Keyboards

When it comes to computers as well as many other types of electronic devises, the first thing we think of is a keyboard. These pieces of equipment are a wonderfully important part of any system because it is the major input devise for the unit. Thanks to the use of special connectors, these are easily attached, and you will find that there are more types today than ever before allowing us many options and features.

The majority of keyboards have keys that produce a wide range of signs or characters, numbers, and/or letters appropriate to the language of the operator. Sometimes, you will be able to push a combination of keys to produce certain actions. These “hotkeys” are quickly gaining in popularity and make computing much easier.

Many keyboards today come in the QWERTY-based layout. However, there are many alternatives to thee traditional QWERTY. The most popular of these alternatives is the Dvorak. In addition, thank to Windows, we now use 104-keys rather than the 101-key standard set in the 80s. As the styles change and technology advances, it will be fascinating to see the next generation of keyboards.

Connection the keyboard to the computer is most commonly completed through the use of a PS/2 or USB connection. Even this has evolved a great deal over the years. Once upon a time, Apple used an Apple desktop bus that was, of course, proprietary to those Apple systems.

A great deal of debate has been over which is better, the PS/2 or the USB. With the changing in technologies, both are commonplace today, and the future will surely see a rise in a new connection type.

For instance, wireless keyboard and mice sets are becoming a popular item in many households and businesses. Wireless uses either infrared (RF) or radio frequency (RF) to send and receive signals that insure the devise works properly.

The mechanics behind the structure of the keyboards have changed as well over time. Older IBM types used a “buckling spring” action which means there was a coil spring underneath each of the keys. When pressed, a rubber done underneath the key would complete the circuit. The “dome switch” is not as popular as the more traditional mechanism, but the majority of keyboards today use the dome mechanism.

There are many multimedia keyboards on the market with “hotkeys” to a variety of programs and websites. Sometimes, these can be customized, and sometimes, they are set. Generally, you will find these hotkeys along the top of the device. Whether you want to quickly mute the music when your boss calls or you want to quickly open up your homepage, these are a great way to make computing easier.

Regardless of the type of device you want, you will find there are numerous options fitting your lifestyle and choices. That is the beauty of our technological advancement.

Specialty keyboards, while not mainstream, still have a following. From gaming devices to touch screen screens, these specialty devises are geared at making life easier while on the computer. Of course, you will find that if you want the best, you will find the device that best suits your needs.
